Created as a four-person game, its rules were written down in bad Latin by Marcello Chitarrella, a Neapolitan priest, in 1750. The origin behind its name is not clear, but it seems that initially in the game sevens were also worth 1/3 of a point, so “three” of them indicated the highest card and “seven” the lowest (from those that had a value of over 0 points) with a scoring value (3, 2, 1, 10, 9, 8, 7), for a total of 12. Subsequently, to make the game flow better and to stop too many games from ending in a draw, the game was improved to “eight”, relegating the seven to the rest of the discarded cards, although it kept the same name of Tresette.
